Instrument Design Technology supplies complete beamlines, systems and components to synchrotron facilities around the world.

Who we are

  • We prefer to work in close collaboration with the scientists and engineers who will use what we supply.
  • That mix of experience lets us talk to the engineers and to the researchers who depend on our products.

  • Trading since 2000, when IDT started at the University of Manchester.
  • Based in Widnes, Cheshire, 7 miles from Daresbury Laboratory.
  • 4300 sq ft of lab space and 1500 sq ft of office space.
  • An ISO 9001:2015 accredited company, certificate number 00506.

Our history

  1. IDT starts trading at the University of Manchester.
  2. Move to larger premises at Daresbury Innovation Centre.
  3. Move to new premises in Widnes, Cheshire, local to Daresbury Laboratory.
  4. Expansion into the adjacent unit, adding more floor space.
  5. Launch of the F-Switch CRL, built under licence from Diamond Light Source.

Widnes is the birthplace of Charles Glover Barkla, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1917 for his discovery of the characteristic X-rays of elements.
