Monochromator Systems

Every IDT monochromator is tailored to its beamline, and built around thermal isolation and stiff, stable mechanics.

At a glance

  • Each monochromator is tailored to the individual needs of the customer.
  • Thermal isolation for minimal thermo-mechanical drift, removing the need for water stabilisation circuits or heaters.
  • Crystal cooling designed for the specific beam profile and heat load.
  • Ultra-stiff mechanics and rotary tables.
  • Mechanics mounted directly on granite base blocks and decoupled from the vacuum vessel.
  • Multiple encoders on the Bragg axis.
  • UHV compatible DC servo motors as an option.
  • Factory energy scan tests using a custom laser quad diode system.

In this range

  • Render of the air bearing double crystal monochromator mounted on a granite base block

    Air Bearing DCM1

GSECARS, MR-CAT and 9-BM at the APS; SMI at NSLS-II

A direct drive air bearing Bragg stage. No contact points, only a 10µm air film, so there is zero backlash and no wear over time.

    Stability
Measured angular stability of 54 nrad
    Bragg speed
    Greater than 20°/sec achievable
    Stiffness
    Radial stiffness of 270N/µm
  • Ultra-stable horizontal DCM installed on the I14 beamline at Diamond Light Source

    Ultra-Stable Horizontal DCM

I14 Hard X-ray Nanoprobe, Diamond Light Source

A cryo-cooled, horizontally deflecting DCM designed with stability as the primary goal, for a beamline 175m long.

    Energy
    4 keV - 26 keV with Si(111) crystals
    Offset
    35mm fixed horizontal offset
    Vibration
First mode at 160 Hz with an amplitude of 25 nrad
  • Quick EXAFS DCM installed on beamline B18 at Diamond Light Source

    Bending Magnet DCM

B16, B18 and B21 at Diamond Light Source; DUBBLE CRG at the ESRF

A direct water-cooled first crystal with small bore cooling matched to the beam footprint. On B18 it runs Quick EXAFS.

    Energy
    2.05keV - 35keV (B18)
    Crystals
    Si(111) & Si(311) with automated crystal exchange
    In service

  • Cryo-cooled horizontally deflecting DCM installed on the XFM beamline at the Australian Synchrotron

    Cryo-Cooled Horizontally Deflecting DCM

    XFM beamline, Australian Synchrotron

A fixed-offset DCM. Soft annealed copper couplings in the cryo-cooling give minimal vibration transmission to the first crystal.

    Energy
    4keV - 25keV
    Stability
    Measured stability of 18 nrad
    Vacuum
    <5×10-8 mbar
  • Double Laue-crystal monochromator mechanics inside the open vacuum vessel

    Double Laue-Crystal Monochromator

Imaging and Medical Beamline, Australian Synchrotron

A translating first crystal and a fixed second crystal that acts as an energy reference, optimised for stability over a sample-mono distance of >150m.

    Energy
    16keV - 100keV
    Offset
Variable mono beam offset 20mm to 25mm
    Vacuum
    1×10-7 mbar
  • Horizontally Deflecting Monochromator

    I04-1, Diamond Light Source

A fixed energy, single crystal monochromator. The crystal is cooled through a copper finger in a liquid gallium bath, for vibration-free cooling.

    Energy
    Fixed energy of 13.53keV
    Crystal
Si(111) at a fixed Bragg angle of 8.402°
    Vacuum

A four bar bender with a ribbed crystal to minimise anticlastic bending. In routine operation on B21 since 2013.

    Bend radius
    To 1.2m
    Acceptance
    Horizontal beam acceptance 60mm
  • DCM Upgrades

GSECARS at the APS; DUBBLE CRG at the ESRF

A cost-effective upgrade of an existing DCM to our latest crystal cage, with a new in-vacuum Bragg encoder and a natural granite base block.

    Crystals
    Si(111) & Si(311) crystal sets
